Peradeniya University graduate wins Shell schol Ms P.A.D.H. Sandaseeli, a temporary Assistant Lecturer at the Agriculture Faculty of the Peradeniya University, has won a place on an international scholarship programme set up by the Royal Dutch Shell Group. Ms. Sandaseeli was awarded the Shell Centenary Scholarship to study for her Masters in Geography Information for Development at Durham University in the United Kingdom. The 12-month course commenced last month. Ms Sandaseeli, who has a Bachelor of Science degree from the Peradeniya University Agriculture Faculty, had found out about the scholarship after the vice-chancellor of the university informed the faculty about the scheme. According to her, the course of study she has been selected for is not offered at any local university. Sandaseeli said: "Geographic Information for Development is important as a subject with the world's environment constantly changing and these changes affecting agriculture. These studies will help us examine the behaviour of seasons and predict the types of changes that are likely to take place, so we can be prepared". She is the second female Sri Lankan in a row to be awarded this scholarship from Shell. Ms Nisha Berugoda won the scholarship last year to take advanced studies in international law at the University College London. The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 to mark the 100th anniversary of Shell Transport and Trading Company. An endowment of 10 million sterling pounds was made to fund 50 or more postgraduate scholarships a year for students from developing countries to study in the United Kingdom. Forty three per cent of this year's scholarships have been offered to women. |
