'The journey back 2002'

Rhuani Rambukwelle could be described as a quiet, calm and gifted young woman, with a passion to put colour onto any possible surface, and bring about the true meaning of life.

Two of the exhibits

Though she never considered herself to be an artist, The journey back 2002, her 11th solo exhibition this October, will prove to be a unique one.

After her O'levels, Rhuani left Ladies' College to enhance her talent and soon found herself as a paste-up artist at Grants Advertising.

Rhuani displays a passion for mixing colours with various materials a gift, she believes is from God. With an experimental mind, Rhuani constantly embarks on new ventures thus directing her talents and giftings to express life situations of the world around her.

In addition to being an artist, Rhuani runs her own graphic design studio Kurio Ishon. Her mini card business also attracts many people and this time too she hopes to have a selection of them for sale. She received an encouragement award in 1997, when she was selected to represent Sri Lanka at a conference held by the Asian Christian Art Association in Indonesia.

Following in her grandfather's footsteps she teaches at her recently opened art school. "The Hardy School of Art" dedicating it to Major Hardy (1930-1950 Trinity College Kandy).

Rhuani believes that an artist can be identified at an early age and taught to use their talent in a constructive way to create masterpieces. With positive teaching of technique and styles each person can reach their own potential.

The journey back 2002 is on from October 17-19 at The Lionel Wendt Art Gallery. Rhuani will display some of her recent pieces of art, in memory of her late father Kavan Rambukwelle the illustrious sportsman who was a source of strength and encouragement to her.

'Sisila Ginigani'

The story of 'Sisila Gini Gani' could easily have been the conventional police investigation of a mysterious and baffling murder in which an ambitious lawyer turned politician and his mistress are the primary suspects. In terms of personal relationships too, the film could have been the familiar conflict of husband, a betrayed wife and a seductive mistress.

Directed by Prasanna Vithanage and produced by Sanath Gunathileke, Sisila Ginigani is being screened at the Regal Cinema. The film will run till October 16. Lead roles are played by Sanath Gunathileke and Sabitha. The cast include Veena Jayakody and Tony Ranasinghe.

But two factors transcend the limitations of theme and story into a highly sophisticated and imaginative film. One is its structure telescoping the present, the past and future into an effortless and compelling cinematic work. Two, its young director whose first film it is, shows a total control of the mechanics of film-making.

The problem with most young film-makers is that they are easily seduced by the fashionable techniques of modern film-making. But here Prasanna Withanage has imbibed all these influences and used them with surprising maturity. Every device used, sweeping crane shots subliminal cutting, flashbacks, rain, fog and mist are used to enrich his narrative style and create atmosphere and mood with precision and impact. From this point of view Prasanna Withanage's is one of the most striking debuts in Sinhala cinema.

Technique however polished can't save a film unless the director has control over his players. Apart from the leading players, even the minor characters, meticulously cast are excellent.

Sanath Gunathileke now shedding his glamour boy cliches, once more turns in a performance, chilling, steely and ruthless. Sabitha Perera as the fun-loving carefree girl who is finally caught up in a tragic network of complicity and suspicion proves once more that given the right role she can impart a great degree of emotion and sincerity to her playing.

Sanath Gunathileke who is also the producer is to be complimented on giving us a so adventurous and accomplished film.

2003 State Drama Festival - a grand panorama

It was for the first time and sadly for the last time that Tamil dramas represented in the State Drama Competition and the festival in 1976. After 27 long years, in 2003, The Sinhala drama panel, The Tamil drama panel and The Muslim fine-arts panel of the Sri Lanka Arts Council in Association with the Department of Cultural Affairs will ensure participation of Tamil dramas for the event making it truly a Sri Lankan drama festival. Sinhala and Tamil lengthy dramas, short dramas, alternative dramas and Puppet dramas and drama scripts can be submitted for the competition.

There will be two separate competitions for Sinhala and Tamil languages.

The newest addition to the festival is the inclusion of alternative dramas. While these dramas should be highly creative and up to a standard the directors should make sure that the dramas will be staged out of the conventional theatre. The directors may choose their theatre venues and the judges will travel to these places for evaluation purposes.

The puppet dramas will add colour to the festival. Artistes of conventional or traditional puppet dramas, new creations, hand puppets and shadow puppets have the opportunity to participate in the competition.

Rules and regulations of the competition can be obtained by sending a self addressed stamped envelope from the secretaries of the Sinhala drama panel, Tamil drama panel and the Muslim fine arts panel or from the Department of Cultural Affairs, 8th Floor, Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla or by visiting any of the above. Applications close on November 30.

The 2003 State Drama Festival will be held during the month of March 2003 in a manner of a grand festival and the awards will be presented on March 27 when the World Theatre Day is celebrated.

Young musicians in concert

Over 100 young musicians between the ages of ten and 25 will perform at a special concert on October 19 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) at Vishaka Vidyalaya Hall.

The National Youth Orchestra is undoubtedly the premier launching pad for many children who learn to play orchestral instruments. Since its inception 10 years ago, the National Youth Orchestra has trained over 500 young musicians. The main objective of the NYO is to take Western music to all parts of the Island and encourage rural schoolchildren to participate in orchestral performance instead of restricting it to privileged schools in the city.

This is the aim of the founder of the National Youth Orchestra Maya Abeywickrema, Consultant to the Ministry of Human Resources, Education and Cultural Affairs.

These young musicians of the NYO have regular training programs on Saturday under the baton of well-known conductors such as Ajith Abeysekera, Dayananda Fernando and Manilal Weerakone.
