Fusion fashions from Bangalore

by Umangi de Mel

Sarita and Nirmal Mandoth, two fashion designers from Bangalore, India are here with a collection of fusion wear. "I've always wanted to come to Sri Lanka and hold an exhibition here. In fact I've got a vast clientele from S.L," a very much silver-tongued Sarita beams. The 'Mandoth' exhibition was held on October 10, 11and 12 at the Hilton, Colombo.

"I have been in the trade for the past 11 years and started business in 1991," says Sarita. A student at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) before she started designing on her own, Sarita together with Nirmal have held shows in the UK, US and the Middle East. The duo has been doing events all over the world for the past ten years including many in Bangalore.

Sarita describes the style as where they take the Indian essence and blend it with western techniques. They specialise in developing 'exquisite ethnic-wear for formal and semiformal occasions with remarkable embroidery and other embellishing works'. "Nirmal, my husband and I are in this together. He handles menswear and we are a good combination," she says. The couple have two stalls in Bangalore, where together they handle an attractive array of 'Indo-Western' clothes, that was the main attraction during the exhibition at Hilton.

The collection combined beautiful Sarees with ritzy pub wear, elegant Ghaghra Cholies with shimmering party wear, authentic Kurta pyjamas with other striking menswear and a whole lot more. The proud designers claim that their biggest achievement was being the designers for the award winning movie 'Mango Souffle' in 2002.

"Fashion is passion for me," states Sarita. "I have really enjoyed doing it. In fact, I happened to be the one who designed clothes for myself and my friends. I've always been fond of clothes," she reveals. Talking about the exhibition held last week, she says that it was her first time in Sri Lanka. "I wanted to come here and give what's mine to them, and I hope they liked the stuff."

Featured are some of the creative outfits by Sarita.
