Rap and hip hop,
not up my street...

Hailing from a musical background DJ Steven has been a mobile DJ for the past ten years. A member of the Good Groove Music and Lighting Entertainment he spins grooves at an exclusive members' club at a 5 star hotel. Besides his regular gigs, he also handles sound and choreography for Bathiya and Santhush, his wife Nevanthi sings in the group. If he won two million rupees he says, he would spend a quarter on acquiring CDs and records and the rest will go to charity....

Name: DJ Steven (Steven Pieres)
Birthday: June 15
Status: Married
Fav colour: Blue

Trendy outfits: I like jeans and T shirts. I want to be comfortable. On the job I like to wear leather jackets and a lot of silver jewellery.

Hair dos: I wear my hair long and I'd love to do weird things with my hair but I have no time. Fav music: Trance, anything listenable. I like Maurro Piccoto.

Embarrassing day: Going late for a wedding. I was the DJ for the evening, the couple had already come in and the poruwa ceremony was going on, and I had to set up my equipment fast. It never happened again in my career.

Qualities you like in a girl: Sincerity and understanding.

How do you reject advances from girls: Hm..m.. there are quite a few advances, but I handle them diplomatically - it's as far as the song goes.

How much of a party guy are you: If I had the time. I would love to freak out. But my seven day shift prevents me. I sleep during the day because I finish by 4 am and spend whatever time I have left with my wife.

Are you superstitious: Very much. I believe in the famous lizard sound. I'm into ESP - I was influenced by my mother and sister. I experience premonitions and more often, they are right.

What makes you happy in life: To make whatever situation as happy as possible.

Who's your fav DJ: Fat Boy Slim. Because of the way he entertains the people. He talks gets the people going and makes the evening into a party atmosphere.

Do you believe in patter or segue: There should be talking. Entertaining - the interaction should be there. You have to enjoy the music you are playing and that enjoyment reaches out to the audience. Is Ibiza a dream: I would love to spin there. It is a dream. You go there to enjoy the music and meet people of different cultures.

Which product would you like to most endorse: Musical equipment for DJing and clothes.

What other profession would you like to be in: I would like to be a full time hair dresser. I like the creativity - the styling, the tinting and making a person look better.

Fav food: Chinese food. I cook too-anything that is easy and not time consuming. I create my recipes on the run!

Fav cartoon character: Calvin and Hobbes.

Have you recorded your own mix: No. I haven't done one. Because I believe in entertaining everybody. Are you a vinyl or CD DJ: I'm on a 60-40 ratio. CD's are fun but vinyls are the, the thing. The mixing and manipulation of the vinyl is the heart of a DJ. I'm interested in the technology of music where computers come into play with regard to creating specific music and re-mixing.

Music you dislike: Rap and hip hop - not up my street. I haven't the patience to listen to the lyrics of rap. I would go for the music and rhythm.

Top tip to be a successful DJ: Be yourself with a pinch of spice. Skill is necessary. It has to come from inside you, so create your own style.

What do you think life would be like in the year 300: The pace will be very fast. The environment will be cleaner. A DJ will still be there - you need someone to click the button!
