Centenary Expressions

The exhibition of paintings "Centenary Expressions" presented by the Teen Art Club of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya was held recently at the Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Gallery as part of its anniversary celebrations.

It was an outstanding effort. The teachers-in-charge were N. Vijayakanthan and Mrs. Manourie Andree. Kalabushana Sihil M. Sirisena trained them.

"Art is a way of contemplating and expressing unity and holiness of all creation. It enables one to journey deep into the heart of the matter, into the heart of Holy Mystery... where all is one. In a world where division and destruction reign supreme, where individuals and societies are fragmented by over-riding conflicts and competition, we need to focus on the spiritual search and giving aspects of life", said Rev. Sister Canice, the Principal of the Convent at the ceremony.

Sybil Wettasinghe, the guest of honour said the children were very talented.

The chief guest His Lordship Most. Rev. Dr. Thomas Yeh Sheng-Nan, Apostolic Nuncio stressed the important role played by artists and said that art had a unique capacity to take one or the other aspects of a messages and translate it into colours, shapes and sounds which nourish the intuition of all those who look or listen.

"In today's society we need artists, just as much as we need science, scientists, technicians, workers, professionals, witnesses of the faiths, teachers, fathers and mothers, who ensure the growth of a person and the development of the community by means of their supreme art form which is an art of education.

Within the vast cultural panorama of each nation, artists have their own unique place, obedience to their own inspiration in creating work both worthwhile and beautiful, they not only enrich the cultural heritage of each nation, and of all humanity, but they also provide social service in favour of the common good" he said.
