Pragna Pradeepa still, all out to help needy 'Pragna Pradeepa', a project initiated by Western Provincial Council member Jayantha de Silva has helped over 50,000 poor students, during the past 13 years. The project has distributed school books, school uniforms and also scholarships to students, to pursue their higher studies in Japan. Last week 100,000 students received school books and cloth for school uniforms donated at a ceremony held at the Campbell Park. Prime Minister's brother Channa Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister's Private Secretary Sudath Chandrasekera, Sarvodaya Leader Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, Western Provincial Council's Leader of the Opposition Kithsiri Kahatapitiya and others were present at the ceremony. Jayantha Silva said that although the project was his brainchild, but there were several to back him in pursuing the project during the past 13 years. He said that the project helped not only the poor but also lower income earning families and to those who look for assistance to obtain bank loans to start self employment." De Silva also said that while as a student at Ananda College he had seen the abject poverty prevailing among the poor, and, from his school days had dedicated his life to serve the poor. |
