National short course record by Mihiri at Sri Lanka Schools - Tamil Nadu aquatic dual byLESLIE FERNANDO Mihiri Kandanarachchi who represented Sri Lanka at the recently concluded Asia Pacific Age Group Swimming Championships in China established a new Short Course National record in the 200 metres individual medley girls under-13 on day one of the inaugural Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka Schools Age Group Invitation Swimming Championships held at the S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia, swimming pool yesterday. Mihiri of Mahamaya College Kandy timed 2.45.43 secs to win the event and to erase off the previous record of 2.47.34 secs set in Kandy last year. She also went on to achieve worthy 'double' winning the 50 metres breast stroke 38.90 secs. In the record breaking 200 individual medley for girls under-13, two experienced swimmers Uma Kavya Dharmadasa (2.48.42 secs) and Imara Fahim (2.55.02 secs) were placed second and third respectively. Indian swimmer Saba Sait had a good swim in the girls under-19, 200 metres individual medley. She timed 2.44.82 secs. She had the satisfaction of beating two national and very prominent swimmers in Chandri Haputhanthri (2.48.71 secs) to second place and Menaka de Silva (2.49.08 secs) third. However, Menaka de Silva did well to win the 100 metres freestyle girls under-19 'clocking' 15.05 secs. There were several swimmers who won a 'double' each yesterday. S. R. Sarath of India in the boys under-11 won the 200 metres IM - 2.56.00 secs and 50 metres freestyle 31.10 secs. Another Indian swimmer Mridula in the girls under - 11 had wins in the 50 metres freestyle 30.68 secs and 200 IM 2.51.06 secs. Imesha Malalasekera bagged 'double' in the girls under-9 - 50 metres breaststroke 49.15 secs and 200 IM 3.35.80 secs. Miniruwani Samarakoon in the girls under-11 took the 200 metres IM 2.53.61 secs and 50 metres breaststroke 42.52 secs. Charith Rogrigo of Sri Lanka swam exceptionally well to win the boys under- 19 - 50 metres freestyle returning time of 25.91 secs while Shruthi Mukundan of India won the girls under- 19 - 50 metres freestyle - 30.68 secs. The meet is organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association. Dr. Sadayavel Kailawsam, Secretary Justice P. S. Kaiasam Medicine and Education and Research Foundation, Chennai was the Chief Guest while Dr. David Ponnaih, Warden, S. Thomas' College was the Guest of Honour.The meet will be continued today at 2.00 p.m. |
