Triple crown for Udaya and Chandrika at Central Province badminton by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN Kandy Sports Correspondent Reigning Women's National Champion Chandrika de Silva and Udaya Wanasinghe swept the board to win a triple crown each at the Central Province Open Badminton Championship organised by the Central Province Badminton Association in conjunction with the Sri Lanka Badminton Association and sponsored by Commercial Bank of Ceylon and worked off at St. Anthony's College Courts in Kandy for over three days over the weekend. This was a national ranking tournament of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association and some of the top players like Manjula Fernando (top seed), Chinthaka Gunaratne (4th seed), M. J. John (5th seed) and Duminda Jayakoddy after entering the contests did not turn up which resulted in walk overs according to the organisers. Reigning Men's Champion Niluka Karunaratne is currently out of the country on national duty. Women's National Champion Chandrika de Silva first won the Women's Doubles partnered by Pameesha Dishanthi to beat Mahamaya schoolgirl Tilini Jayasinghe and Amali Amerasinghe with the latter pair putting up a good performance in the first set but went down in the second one. Her title was in the Mixed doubles here was partnered by Udaya Wanasinghe and they were given by some anxious moments by C. Kumarapperuma and Pameesha Dishanthi who after a poor first set came back to win the second set 11/8 but the winners mopped up the last set 11/2. In the semi finals the winning duo beat coach-student combination of Pradeep Welagedera and Tilini Jayasinghe 11/8, 11/3. But Chandrika de Silva on her way to the triple faced some unexpected opposition from the 17 year old Mahamaya schoolgirl Tilini Jayasinghe. The other triple crown winner Udaya Wanasinghe after his win in the mixed doubles ran into difficulties in the Singles Finals against Thanuja Liyanage losing the first set 15/17, but came around to smash the next two sets 15/1, 15/6 without raising much sweat. |
