Free trade agreement with China?

China is keen to form a free trade agreement with Sri Lanka soon, the Chinese Ambassador in the island Qingheng Jiang said at a recent meeting with Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake.

The Minister invited Chinese entrepreneurs to visit Sri Lanka and explore the possibility of forming joint ventures.

He welcomed Chinese investments, specially in the textile mill industry.

The Ambassador said that tourism has been identified by China as a thrust industry for further exploration.

Sri Lanka's present exports to China mainly comprise raw materials such as rubber and coconut fibre.

Karunanayake emphasised the importance of tapping the Chinese market for other export commodities.

Importing tractors and electronic devices from China was also discussed at the meeting.
