Blues that set off sparks

Singing and playing the piano with a great deal of experience and enthusiasm, Bill Heid transformed the Lionel Wendt Theatre on Tuesday October 1 into a sizzling den of blues and jazz.

A pianist who has recorded and performed with the legendary names in jazz and blues he captivated the audience with his blues bent phrases and up tempo latin jazz expressions. Supported by a rhythm section - Patrick O'Leary - acoustic bass and Michael Petrosino - drums - the trio generated sparks hitherto unexperienced by music lovers. Bill Heid's blues vocals, earthy and raspy had that dignity and technique which was engaging, which kept you with him till the end. The two encores from a near crazy audience was unfortunately not enough. We thought Bill Heid would have returned for just one more. But we guess he knew how to go off on a high. Quite naturally.

The program a tight one hour duration leant heavily on the blues embellished with blues standards like Ninety Nine, Save Your Love For Me and the B.B. King hit 'The Thrill Is Gone'. The expressions of the music were packed with delightful solos from Bill Heid's swift right hand runs, drummer Michael Petrosino's brush and stick cruises and bassist Patrick O'Leary's fluency on the strings. There were many exchanges between the instruments and nearer the end of the program Bill Heid steered the audience into a successful chorus participation of a blues favourite.

This evening of good music was a cultural presentation of the United States of America, in their Kennedy Centre - Department of State Touring Jazz Ambassadors Celebrate the Blues program. We wonder when the next one will turn up on our shores!
