Meeting with Prabha : Helgessen to trek A-9 route by Ananth Palakidnar The Norwegian deputy Foreign Minister and the facilitator of the Sri Lankan peace process Vidar Helgessen will travel via the A-9 land route from Jaffna to meet the LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran, in Vanni on Tuesday October 22 , sources said. Mr.Helgessen along with the Norway's special envoy to Sri Lanka Erik Solheim will arrive in Colombo, today, for an extensive tour of the south and thereafter to the north, to familiarise with the socio,economic and political issues of the country sources said. The Norwegian deputy Foreign Minister and his entourage will visit Jaffna on Tuesday and inspect areas, which were affected by two decades of war in the region. On the same day Helgessen will travel in a motorcade to the LTTE controlled Vanni to meet the LTTE leader Prabhakaran. During his talks with the LTTE supremo the Norwegian facilitator will discuss the recent disturbances in the east and also on the second round of peace talks to be held in Thailand. Helgessen will be at Kilinochchi on Tuesday night and is expected to meet Prabhakaran again on Wednesday, sources said. Along with Prabhakaran, LTTE theoretician Dr.Anton Balasingam, Dr.Joy Maheswaran, one of the participants at the Thai talks and LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilchelvan will take part in the talks with Helgessen. The meeting is considered as strategically important prior to the second round of talks in Thailand sources said. Meanwhile, Helgessen who will tour the Hambantota district on Monday before embarking on his tour of the north will monitor the development projects carried out with the Norwegian assistance in the south parliamentarians and government officials from Hambantota district will hold an extensive meeting with Helgessen on vital problems such as drought and poverty alleviation in the region, sources said. After the completion of his hectic North-South tour Helgessen will also hold formal meetings with President and the Prime Minister. |
