Kegalle Police crack open 'buried' case

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

After several months of painstaking detective work the Kegalle Police were able to crack open a case where two persons were shot dead at the Nelum Fashion Garments in Kegalle last May.

Several soldiers wanted in connection with the murder of a fellow soldier, whose bullet riddled body was found at a rubber estate in the Ruwanwella area were to be arrested by a special team of Police officers led by OIC Ruwanwella, IP Rohan Premaratne, Police sources told the 'Sunday Observer'.

A special team including OIC Ruwanwella, Rohan Premaratne and five Police constables have been detailed by Kegalle's Senior Supdt. of Police, Lionel Gallege to solve the mysterious death of the soldier and policemen who were shot dead by an unknown person during an attempted robbery at Nelum Fashion Garments in Ruwanwella, last May.

Meanwhile, the Police arrested four Army Commandos based at a camp in Gampaha area along with a Police Sergeant attached to a Colombo Police station, allegedly linked to the murder and attempted robbery of Nelum Fashions.

The sergeant had been responsible for staging a robbery where four Browning pistols were robbed from a private security firm in Dehiwela. Later the Police was able to recover a T-56 automatic weapon, four Browning Pistols five hand grenades, cartridges, service uniforms stolen from the Army. Police also recovered a vehicle from Ja-Ela used by the Army Commandos. It was learnt that the owner of the vehicle had hired the vehicle to an Army personnel.

According to Police sources the murdered soldier was identified as one Bamunusinghe, a crack Commando attached to an army camp. Bamunusinghe had been the mastermind behind the planning of Nelum Fashions failed robbery at Ruwanwella although he had not participated in the robbery due to his wife's objections.

Bamunusinghe had lent the stolen T-56 automatic weapon which he had brought from his residence in Bulathsinghala to another Commando named Narangoda. The motive for the murder by his colleague was because he wanted back the T-56 automatic weapon used in the slaying of a policeman at Nelum Fashions Garment's failed robbery last May.
