Police to 'cement' cordial relations with media

To establish cordial relationship with the mass media and to iron out thorny issues that could affect the public in general, new Inspector General of Police (IGP) T.E. Anandarajah and the Senior DIGs have decided to hold a weekly press briefing at the Police Headquarters, every week .

The IGP, made this announcement last week when he hosted the media at a function held at the Senior Police Officers Mess at Keppettipola Mawatha, Colombo 5. Representatives from both the print and the electronic media and several DIGs attended the function.

Anandarajah said that it was important to discuss issues such as crime that affects the public so that the media will be kept well informed on steps taken by the police. The media too will be able to pinpoint to the police hierarchy at these meetings of any lapses on the part of the police so that remedial action could be taken promptly.

This is the first occasion that such a briefing will take place at Police Headquarters. The weekly press briefing will be chaired by DIG, (Crimes) Sirisena Herath, the Director Police Public Relations (PPR) SSP, Reienzy Perera. Several media personnel have expressed their enthusiasm to attend the briefings.
