Record tea production

Sri Lanka produced 24.7 million kilos of tea in September, which is an all time record for a month according to the Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers (Pvt) Ltd. Weekly Tea Market Report.

This is 7.5 million kg or 43.7 per cent higher than the 17.2 million kg production in September 2001. The tea production for the year (January - September) at 227.3 million kg is 11 million kg or five per cent higher than the 216.3 million kg recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year.

"If the volume produced during the last quarter of 2001 is repeated this year, the all time record production of 305 million kilos in 2000 would be bettered this year," the report said. Meanwhile, according to an Asia Siyaka Commodities news release, a line of Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings Extra Special from the Morawakkorale Tea Factory was sold at a record price of Rs. 4,300 per kilo at the Colombo Tea Auction last week.

The tea was purchased by Reza Seylani Tea (Pvt) Ltd and marketed by Asia Siyaka Commodities (Pvt) Ltd.

The factory is owned and managed by the Tea Producers Co-operative Society Limited, comprising around 2300 tea smallholders.

The factory at Kotapola, Deniyaya is considered to be one of the better managed units in the low country, the release said.
