Club for the whole family

by Elmo Leonard

Sri Lanka's first town and country club is expected to go into operation in early-January.

Fingara Town and Country Club is owned and managed by F&G Property Developers (Pvt) Ltd, a member of Ceylinco Consolidated. This home away from home, family club is located on a three and a half-acre block in Delkanda, Nugegoda. Eighty per cent of the construction work is complete at the moment and the project is expected to cost Rs 365 million.

"It will have the most number of recreation facilities offered by a Sri Lankan club under one roof," Deputy Chairman, Finance and Guarantee Group, Mervyn Jayasinghe said. Town and country clubs are frequented by families, in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Australia.

Most clubs in Sri Lanka, which are visited by men, keep the family apart.

Town and country clubs keep the family together during the evening or on holidays, until they leave. The Fingara club will have facilities such as swimming-pools for adults and kids, badminton, squash and tennis, table tennis and indoor games, bowling alley, cricket nets, pool room, golf putting (indoor), aerobics centre, video arcade sports library, kids' play area, restaurant and pub, coffee shop, karaoke bar, conference rooms and gymnasium and parking space for 110 cars.

The Finance and Guarantee Co. at Colombo 12 was a failed finance company, with a Rs 3 million investment. The Central Bank ceded the company to the Ceylinco Group in 1989. Today, the Finance and Guarantee Group comprises seven companies - Finance and Guarantee Co, F&G Property Developers (Pvt) Ltd, F&G Real Estate Consolidated and Brokers, F&G Real Estate Company Ltd, F&G Markom (Pvt) Ltd, F&G Global Communications (Pvt) Ltd, and Fingara Town and Country Club (Pvt) Ltd.

Fingara is the brainchild of Director, F&G Property Developers Ltd, Mohan Perera. The concept was fortified by Ceylinco Chairman, Lalith Kotelawela.

Fingara was floated in September. "Membership will be limited; in the first year membership will be restricted to 850," Jayasinghe said.

The Fingara membership could be traded, a first for a club membership. However, F&G reserves the right to choose its members. When membership is traded, F&G will charge a broking commission, Jayasinghe explained.

Fingara can also be used for seminars and conferences.
