Executive attire

Business Style by J.A.A.S. Ranasinghe

How do you attire yourself? It is extremely important to select a suitable and matching dress for the given occasion.

If the dining you have to attend is a high level official luncheon or dinner party where the gathering of VIPs and business tycoons is expected, then the casual dress will be out of place. Following are some tips that one should keep in mind.

* When attending a luncheon or breakfast meeting, light colours are more in place.

* Darker materials or dresses should be worn for the dinner.

* Your complexion and the colour of the dress are closely related. Dark complexioned persons as far as possible should select light colours. The appearance and personality of people with fair complexions further increase when they wear dark coloured garments.

* Dinner is relatively respectable than the lunch. Even in a family, it is a family congregation. Therefore, even at a family dinner, the members are expected to be properly dressed.

* It is a must that one should remove one's hat, cap or overcoat before sitting down to dine.

* In certain Western hotels (even in Sri Lanka), it is customary for men to wear a tie, without which they will not be allowed to enter the dining hall.

* It is advisable to skip the lunch or the dinner (formal), when you are in short trousers and sportswear.

* Special care has to be taken in the selection of perfumes. A mild perfume is always preferable. Perfumes that give a pungent odour should be avoided.

The rule of thumb is that your presence at the dining table should not be a hindrance or discomfort to other guests. Application of a deodorant instead of a strong perfume is ideal.

* Refrain from biting and cleaning finger nails in the presence of the guests.
