The Citadel : the star in the ancient highland capital

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

The Citadel which opened its doors in 1984, was an ancient walawwa owned by the Dunuwille family, who sold it to the John Keells Group.

The restaurant and guest rooms overlooking the pool

John Keells converted the old 'walawwa' to a star class hotel designed by Mihindu Keerthiratne, the renowned architect, for which Keerthiratne received the best designing award in 1984.

Built on a 4-acre land tastefully landscaped, in the ancient highland capital of Kandy, The Citadel overlooks the mighty scenic Mahaweli river surrounded by the velvety mountains.

Complementing the natural beauty of its unique location, each of the 121 deluxe air-conditioned rooms open out to the mighty Mahaweli river, and the lush garden adorned by a large swimming pool.

All rooms are equipped with modern facilities of a star class property, including large TV, telephone with IDD facilities, mini bar, 24-hour room service, piped music, wall to wall carpeting and private balcony.

The Citadel has two restaurants, the main restaurant and the 'Prestige' restaurant which offer exclusive dining/A-la carte meals.

The latest addition to the hotel is the large conference hall with multi-media facilities, which was opened in 2001. It is serviced by sophisticated audio visual equipment which make it the ideal venue for conferences and banquet functions.

The hotel offers its guests boat trips on the Mahaweli river and excursions to Kandy's main tourist attractions, 'Knuckles Range',GolfCourse, Mahiyangana/Dambana, the 'Tea Museum' at Hantane, train trips to Nanu-Oya and the 'Bahirawakanda' Buddha statue, said Manager, The Citadel, Iqbal Jaleel who has over 27 years experience in the hospitality industry, with 10 years overseas experience. Jaleel has worked in a number of five-star hotels in Sri Lanka and aborad, and gained wide experience in the hotel trade. As an additional feature, The Citadel has its own cricket, football and volley ball teams in order to play with corporate outings.

The hotel offers a variety of recreation facilities including Snooker, Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess, Carom, Scrabble and many more. The hotel also has a Herbal Centre which is very popular amongst foreign guests.

The 'Theme Nights' offered to guests, with delicious Western, Eastern and Sri Lankan specialities, prepared by Executive Chef, Sujeewa and his team of experienced cooks, are popular amongst guests. Guests enjoy a variety of entertainment including live bands, DJ music, live calypso organ and piano music. The Citadel is one of the 'Platinum Circle' hotels of the John Keells Group.
