Respire and keep listening....
Kreb's Cycle

'Theory of respiration'- nothing living can do without it," states Azlan, the leader of the noisiest band around town, that also has a `biological' side to it.

Kreb's Cycle the five member-band which has Senaka on drums, Iqqi on bass and vocals, Ranil on lead guitars and vocals, Ezraad on lead guitar and vocals and Azlan on vocals.

What's with the name?

"Actually it's the theory of respiration, and no one will ever come up with a name like that plus nobody will look in a biology book for that name," says Azlan, who seem to know a bit of biology. The band which started off as `Distortion', and has their debut performance at Viharamahadevi Park, with `Ground Zero', at Interflash in '97. In 1998, the group had another name change and performed at the `Art Centre' for the first time as Kreb's Cycle.

The group plays music which they say is what rock is evolved into and stake claims to being one of the first bands to play '90s music in Sri Lanka along with Stigmata and Independence Square. Self-dubbing themselves as an alternative rock band, they say they prefer to keep that identity among the temporary clutter of local bands that exist.

"We don't play commercial music, at least we try not to," they insist and add, "We do Goo goo dolls, Linkin Park, Creed, Incubus, Nirvana, Puddle of mud, Nickel Back, Train, Staind and a lot more, but we skip classic rock, although not very successfully."

How does Kreb's Cycle see the rest of the bands? "Each group has an identity; Soul is more Blind Faith type of music, while Sound Journey does classic rock. The classification is good because there actually was a time when all bands played the same type of music," explins Azlan, while Ranil adds "And now it's very nicely split."

Do they play originals? "Well we do our own music, in fact, we do seven to eight originals when we play, but it's kinda hard to get noticed playing originals," grins Azlan. "Actually it's hard to get air play for the originals, but the crowd knows our music," adds Ranil.

The group play at Rhythm & Blues-on pre poya, at Clancy's and one night at Bliss, and say that it is hard to work on a regular basis since all five members work, which is why they play only during the week-end. Do they have a regular crowd?

"We see a lot of regular faces," says Ranil, "..every band has their regulars." They say that they get a big crowd every time they do a free gig but because of the cover charges, people are reluctant to come. "Our crowd contains people from 15 to 30 years of age," They say adding," And our target audience is anybody who listens to alternative."

Any future plans? "We are looking for sponsors for our album, that is the main focus," they say. Any regrets? "No regrets, but it's better to play for bigger and receptive crowds. Nevertheless, we are OK," sats Azlan.

So what about the noise? "Plus we are the noisiest band, in fact, lots of clubs have asked us not to be so noisy," the group chortles, but add, "We are not annoyingly loud, just louder than most of the bands. Actually the reason behind this is most of the bands have soft sets, but only we've got loud sets," says Ezraad.

What do they think about the Golden Clef Awards?

"It is very good, as it may be the only kind of award for the Western music industry, in Sri Lanka. It gives recognition and shows appreciation to the music industry and musicians."
