Court judgement no deterrent to peace process by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The High Court sentence passed on Velupillai Prabhakaran, does not affect the peace process and the Opposition is making every effort to receive political advantages from it, Justice, Law Reforms and National Integration Minister W. J. M. Lokubandara told the Sunday Observer. Minister Lokubandara also said that he himself and the UNF Government respectfully welcomed the High Court judgement and they were bound to protect the independence of the judiciary. "The Judgement of the High Court is only for a individual person. But, the Peace process is not a matter between the Prime Minister and the LTTE Leader Prabhakaran. It is a national problem and it is between a country and an organisation. Who will dare to compare these events together?" he questioned. The Minister further said that ones who took it as a big problem only see petty political chances. "If anyone thinks to make alternative governments resulting from this problem, it is only a day-dream. The other thing is that anyone has a right of appeal against a judgement of the Court of Appeal," the Minister added. PA Parliamentarian Nimal Siripala de Silva at a press briefing held in last Friday had charged the Justice Minister was silent on the matter and the Minister of Constitutional Affairs had commented on it. MP de Silva had also said that it was a record in the judiciary system, since nobody had been sentenced to such a long period (200 years) in prison by the Sri Lankan Judiciary. |
