Colombo bustling despite mild stir

The clashes that took place between two ethnic factions in Maligawatte area took a heavy toll last week with one person dead, 18 injured and damage caused to public property including vehicles, when mobs went on a rampage and torched several vehicles in Maligawatte and Maradana areas. But the situation was brought under control by Friday with the deployment of several thousand policemen, including members of the Special Task Force (STF) and the armed services.

DIG Colombo, Bodhi Liyanage speaking to the Sunday Observer said that the situation was well under control now and policemen have been instructed to arrest any one inciting violence.

He said certain actions on part of some disgruntled persons had resulted in a series of violent incidents but the police and the armed services were able to contain violence spreading to other parts of Colombo.
