Hill capital back to pristine glory

by Anjana Gamage

Several places of historical interest in the hill capital and around Sri Dalada Maligawa are in a dilapidated condition.

Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr.Karunasena Kodithuwakku was on an inspection tour recently, visiting Kandy and the palace of Sinhala King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe.

It is also observed that at present the carvings, furniture and wood in the roof belong to the ancient palace is in a decomposing manner.

According to Ministry sources, the restoration work will be done illustrating the indications of ancient historical Kandyan kingdom.

The Minister had earlier informed Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeratne that the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is also concerned about the project and promised to commence rehabilitation work as soon as possible after identifying the relevant places.

The project will commence next year, funded by the Archaeological Department.
