Crack-down on spurious drug dealers from December

The Food and Drug Inspectors attached to the Deputy Provincial Director, Health Services, in the respective districts of the country will crackdown on spurious drug dealers, bogus pharmacies and those who contravene the Cosmetic Devices and Drug Authority's specifications with effect from December. The officers will conduct lightning weekly raids and nab those who flout them. This was disclosed to the "Sunday Observer" by the Chief Food and Drug Inspector, (CDDA), L. Karunatilaka.

Mr. Karunatilaka said that the CDDA's main objective in authorising the District Food and Drug inspectors with this task was to protect the authenticity of pharmaceutical products and ensure that the general public was sold standard drugs.

"The CDDA inspectors with the assistance of District Food and Drug inspectors conducted several raids, but the CDDA, has directed to carry out such raids weekly to make it more effective, " said Karunatilaka.

When asked about the aim of the new strategy, Mr. Karunatilaka explained that the officers should mainly focus on injections and vaccine which have been stored by some pharmacies below 2 to 8 degrees centigrades, which is below the required temperature. The CDDA officers, who successfully conducted raids on a number of pharmacies in Panadura, Gampaha and Colombo, will take legal action against some of the offenders. It is mandatory to maintain correct temperature levels with the required storage conditions at all times because drugs are liable to become poisonous and, as a result, it is bound to seriously affect the patients.

The Cosmetics Devices and Drug Authority functions under the Authority of Cosmetics Devices and Drug Act of 1980 which controls registration, importation, sale, storage, distribution, labelling, advertising, transport and distribution of the drugs to the entire nation. The present control system comes under the Drug Regulatory Authority headed by Director Medical Technology and Supplies Dr. B.F.S. Samaranayaka and Deputy Director General (Laboratory Services) Dr. U.A. Mendis. - (D.A.W.)
