Pensioneers could breath sigh of relief

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

Pensions Section of the Ministry of Education will be handed over to the private sector, from 2003, to provide a better service to teachers and other employees after their retirement.

Human resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku took this decision, after considering several complaints.

Officials confirmed this pilot project will be implemented in districts selected for the first phase. The plan is to see that personal files of those who had retired from service could apply to the Department of Pensions within three months and with the new structural changes, could be expedited.

Minister Dr. Kodituwakku told the Sunday Observer that some of the officers are 'clever in putting off' their duties. "Some are inefficient. They fail to send even an acknowledgment," he added.

The Minister added that he had already directed his officials to go through teachers' grievances by placing them under three categories. Problems identified could be solved within the Ministry itself, those could be solved with the assistance of other ministries and Financial problems.
