The launching of the SHILPA 2002 Logo was held recently at the Galle Face hotel, Colombo as a part of National Festival of Handicrafts and Tourism. The handicraft industry comprising of jewellery, pottery, basket weaving, woodcarving, sculpturing are the main source of income for over 250,000 families living mainly in villages. This unique industry, a replica of the grandeur of the past also seen as a `cottage industry', has now been neglected and scorned. The end result the `Now Generation' is unaware of the glorious past, the profound diversity of heritage and added to that the charm among the general public has been drastically reduced over the years. Hence there is a grave need to revive the industry. The National Craft Council, the apex body promoting the handicraft industry both locally and internationally together with the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotions and Tourism Ministry have taken steps to uplift the industry. The exhibition of this nature hopes to create a forum for the craftsmen and women to showcase their products to the public, to bring the whole handicraft industry under one-roof to provide opportunities for everybody dependent on this industry to earn a better living and educate the public about our culture, traditions and the industry. |
