Meteorite to hit Sri Lanka? Will a meteorite fall from the skies on Sri Lanka this week? Meteorology Department officials say they have no evidence of such a possibility and refuse to comment on what they say is pure speculation. But natural disaster prophet Lalith Wijewardena claims that a meteorite is likely to crash to Earth on to little Sri Lanka somewhere near Nittambuwa. And Wijewardena has been proven right with previous predictions of earthquakes. - (See full interview on Page 3) EPDP councillor attacked Opposition Leader of the Chavakachcheri Town Council , Soosaimuttu Alexander (EPDP) sustained serious injuries in an attack by unidentified persons. He was later admitted to the base Hospital, Manthikai, Point Pedro, yesterday.The EPDP has accused the LTTE of the attack. Chavakachcheri Town Council is controlled by the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE). Soosaimuttu Alexander,38, was at his fiancee's residence when the attack took place on Friday. Two persons with clubs and swords entered the house and attacked Soosaimuttu while he tried to defend himself with a stick. The EPDP Parliamentarian K.Thavaraja told the Sunday Observer, this was the latest of a series of attacks on EPDP cadres in the Peninsula of late has been brought to the notice of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. Sighting of the Ramazan new moon A conference of learned Ulema, theologians, katheebs, trustees of Jumma mosques, representatives of Thakkiyas and Zaviyas and representatives of the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs, Insha Allah, will be held on Wednesday November 6 after Maghrib Prayers, under the auspices of the Colombo Grand Mosque Inc., at the Grand Mosque premises, to determine the date to commence the Holy month of Ramazan, Hijri 1.423 on the evidence of sighting the new moon in any part of Sri Lanka. The Colombo Grand Mosque appeals to the Muslim Public to look out for the New Moon of Ramazan on the evening of Wednesday 6th November 2002. If the new moon is sighted, please inform the Colombo Grand Mosque Inc., on telephone 432110, 434651 or 0777-366099, immediately, with reliable witnesses. According to the Department of Meteorology, Colombo, the sun sets at 6.20 p.m. and the moon sets at 7.52 p.m. on 6th November 2002. Hence, the new moon will be above the horizon for 92 minutes. Thus, the new moon should be visible to the naked eye on that day, weather permitting. |
