Six Tigers nabbed with arms, mines

The Navy has arrested at least six Tamil Tiger rebels with arms and communication equipment in a boat off Trincomalee, Police said yesterday.

The cadres were arrested on Friday night while transporting 35 claymore mines, 17 handheld communication receivers and a satellite antenna, a senior Police official said.

"Five of them were youths below 30 years of age, with one just 16 years old," he said. The Navy believed the mines and equipment were being transported to Sampur, an area near Trincomalee controlled by the LTTE.

Hagrup Haukland, a spokesman for the Nordic truce monitoring group, said the Navy had informed them of the incident and they were in touch with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) office in Trincomalee. (AFP)
