Swimming - no longer amateur sport

The Outstation meet exclusively held for swimmers from the outstations who have not participated in NAASU major meets will be held during the second week in December at the SSC swimming pool.

Meanwhile the executive committee of NAASU will meet shortly to discuss the issue of changing the present name of NAASU. They will toe the line with FINA by removing the present name of Amateur.

A senior official of NAASU said that most probably National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka will be changed to Swimming Association of Sri Lanka. The change of the name will have to take place at the next annual general meeting of NAASU in February 2003.

The FINA conducted swimming referees clinic scheduled to be held from October 21 to 25 has been postponed for November 17 to 21 by the Asian Amateur Swimming Association. The clinic was to held in Bangalore and now it will be staged in Hyderabad. The three NAASU officials N. K. R. Bamunuarachchi of Sri Lanka Air Force, Kithsiri Dayananda of Sri Lanka Police and E. J. Rodney Silva of Fishtail Aquatic Club were selected by the executive committee of NAASU and all three will have bear all expenses. Swimming officials from other Asian countries will also participate. The chief instructor will be Woon Su Kut a member of the FINA referees panel and senior official of the Asian Amateur Swimming Association. Inter-club meet

NAASU will hold its last major meet, the Inter-Club meet on November 29 and 30 at S. Thomas' College Swimming Pool, Mt. Lavinia.

The entry forms could be obtained from NAASU office at Reid Avenue. This year, the Thomians will host the meet according to a senior NAASU official.
