UB40 to 'reggae' on Dec. 14

by Anjana Gamage

Sri Lankan music fans are in for a grand treat, when UB40, the highly popular British music group, dubbed the 'Kings of reggae' perform live at the Parliamentary grounds, Jayawardenapura on December 14.

A historical first, the performance, highlighted as a 'peace concert' will be held to celebrate the peace process and is scheduled to be projected via satellite to Jaffna, Trincomalee, Kandy and Galle.

More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the mega event, for which Sri Lanka has also been granted television rights to record and telecast the event in the region.

Trade and Commerce Minister Ravi Karunanayake, brainchild behind the UB40 concert, said that the decision to bring the world popular reggae group for a one-off local show had been made subsequent to discussions with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

"The Prime Minister and I were in Bangalore when UB40 was performing there. At that time, we thought there should be a similar peace and unity concert in Sri Lanka as well," he said, adding that this was the most suitable period to bring the group down, as the country was heading for lasting peace.
