Curbing campus violence : Varsity Act to be amended by ANJANA GAMAGE An all-party parliamentary select committee was appointed last week to discuss proposals and recommendations to amend the University Act to maintain discipline and prevent violence in the universities, Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku told the "Sunday Observer". "Proposals introduced by the members of all political parties will be considered to combat violence in the universities to maintain a peaceful environment and they will be incorporated where necessary in the draft bill", he pointed out. MEP parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena will scrutinize and present the Opposition members' proposals in this regard. "The suggestions of the parliamentary committee will help to review the University Act as well", he said. Meanwhile, Minister of Tertiary Education and Training Kabir Hashim said that there are certain difficulties in implementating the proposed anti-ragging bill due to the university administration and political reasons. Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Jayawardenapura University (SJU) Dr. D. S. Epitawatta, has called for the views of 500 lecturers including the deans of the four faculties of the SJU - Medicine, Science, Arts and Management - to consider the re-opening of the university and their proposals to curb violence in the universities. "They will hand over a comprehensive report after November 22. Their opinions and key ideas will be discussed on November 25 and 26 at the university premises. After November 26 and 27, I will be able to decide when the SJU should be re-opened," he said. According to him, Rs. 15 lakhs worth of property have been damaged due to the recent student clashes. "But the loss of a student's life is irreparable. How can we give a value sense for him?", he asked. |
