SLAAS all out for privatisation by Don Asoka Wijewardena Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Sciences (SLAAS) is to propose to the government that areas which they could consider most appropriate for privatisation. SLAAS which is ready with a list of proposals urges the government, first to assess (a) the performance of the enterprises already privatised, (b) the desirability of privatising public ventures in Sri Lanka's context taking into account its social, economic and cultural background, (c) the capacity of the private sector in Sri Lanka to take over major enterprises and (d) the negotiation capacity of Sri Lankan decision-makers to negotiate privatisation transactions on terms favourable to the country, and then decide whether Sri Lanka should embark on privatising its public enterprises or not. SLAAS will focus attention on issues related to expansion of scientific knowledge among people, especially among students at their 58th annual session to be held from December 2 to 7 at the BMICH. The sessions will be held from December 4 to 7 at the Colombo University. Rector, Dr. Amir Muhammed, National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Pakistan will be the chief guest. Speaking at a press conference held at the SLAAS Chamber Council, President of the SLAAS, Dr. P.A.J. Ratnasiri,said that this year's annual sessions would include sectional-based sessions with multi-sectional and disciplinary activities, resulting in greater interaction among scientists of different disciplines working. Dr.Mohan Abeyratne of the SLAAS explained that the world never remained static and it was always dynamic with new scientific innovations for the benefit of the humanity. He added that there had been the pace of scientific advancement that even the best scientists could not keep up with discoveries outside their own fields. |
