Sumathi Awards again with big bang on Saturday by ANJANA GAMAGE Sumathi Awards 2002, an annual festival that felicitates teledrama artistes for the past seven years organised by the Sumathi Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd, will be held at the BMICH on Saturday, November 30 at 6.00 pm under the patronage of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya. The first Sumathi Awards presentation took place in 1995 and this is the eighth in a row. Only teledramas, documentaries and TV Commercials telecast from April 1 2001 to March 31 2002 are eligible. An independent jury will select the award winning entries submitted by Rupavahini, ITN, Swarnavahini, Sirasa and the TNL. Apart from the main presentation, all local TV stations have been invited. The festival night will be coloured, with dancing performances presented by pupils of well-known artistes Channa Wijewardena, Piyasara Shilpadipathi, Rajini Selvanayagam, Kulasiri Budawaththe and Ariyaratne Kaluarachchi. Veteran musician Rohana Weerasinghe will be in charge of music, while the theme song sung by vocalist Sunil Edirisinghe. About 40 different categories of awards will be presented at the festival. An outstanding feature of the annual event is the presentation of the once-in-a-lifetime, U.W. Sumathipala Commemorative award for a local artiste who had dedicated his or her life to uplift the art culture in the country. A live telecast of the Sumathi Awards presentation will be telecast on Rupavahini on November 30 from 9.30 pm onwards. |
