CILT compliments Govt.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport has complimented the Government on the budget announcement made to establish a road fund.

"This is a step in the right direction to improve the deteriorating quality of the Sri Lankan Roads," said Mr. Diren Hallock Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka in this endeavour is following the progressive steps taken by many other countries such as New Zealand, South Africa, United States, Ghana, Latvia, Honduras being some of them. "We need not only significant improvement in the maintenance of roads in order to have at least minimum quality standards but we need to minimise cost and eliminate wastes. Our country has found the Road Fund to be an ideal tool to achieve the goals," Mr. Hallock further said.

Initially the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport organized a workshop on "Public/Private Road Maintenance and its Finances" on 19th, June 1999, together with Ministry of Transport and Highways and World Bank to introduce the concept of Road Funds in Sri Lanka.

Subsequently the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport published a book authored by Dr. Amal Kumarage, Senior Lecturer and head of Transportation and Engineering Division, University of Moratuwa and Geneive Connors, a Ph.D researcher of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by the title "An introduction to Road Funds a conceptual case study of Sri Lanka."

"We have no doubt that this is a step in the right direction not only to improve the condition of Sri Lankan roads but also to reduce road accidents many of which are caused due to deficiency in road designs and maintenance," Mr. Hallock added.

"As transportation professionals we are very supportive to the government for this positive forward looking step taken definitely in the right direction," he concluded.
