Vegetarian delicacies in Parliament

Hot hot Thosai and delicious Sambar will be served in Parliament, in the future at the canteen. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Alhaj A. H. M. Azwer informs that thosai, string hoppers, iddli, wade and other vegetarian stuff will be available twice a week, for MPs.

Minister Azwer also said that during the Ramazan season the canteen will provide dates, porridge and other foodstuff to Muslim MPs to their break their fast.

PM, Cabinet takes oath

ISLAMABAD - A loyalist of President Pervez Musharraf, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, took oath Saturday as Pakistan's first civilian prime minister in three years.

Musharraf administered the oath to Jamali at around 10:20 am (0500 GMT) in a ceremony at the presidential palace attended by members of parliament, military brass and diplomats.

Human smuggling racket bared

A secret human smuggling operation racket had its lid blown off when 58 persons planning to migrate to Italy illegally from Devundera area were apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while organisers who planned the racket had fled the area, police sources told the Sunday Observer.

Gandera Police who initially conducted the raid on a community centre at Devundera on a tip-off last Thursday under the directions of OIC, B. Karunanayake, said that many taken in for questioning were persons from Chillaw and Negombo areas while others were from the Kilinochchi area. The suspects were later handed over to the CID for further investigations.

Officials of the CID's anti smuggling operation unit have been detailed to track down the organisers who were planning to smuggle people to Italy illegally. However, it was not clear how the organisers were planning to smuggle the people into Italy. Meanwhile, Interpol sources said that a boat carrying 149 Sri Lankans illegally to a Western country were apprehended by the Egyptian police in the Suez canal recently. An investigation has been launched by the Cairo police into the incident.

Corpse 'Rests in peace' at customs warehouse

The Customs officials were in for a rude shock on Saturday when they opened a package lying at a warehouse in Colombo and discovered a mighty decomposed body of a woman packed neatly in a sealed polythene cover. The Custom's Baggage and the Narcotics Director, S. Ramachandran who was informed of the discovery had then directed the officers to inform the Maradana police to investigate into the matter. According to Custom sources the baggage had been lying at the warehouse for the past two and a half years, consigned from Kuwait to a person at Narammala. Although the Customs officials on a numerous occasions had informed the consignees concerned, to clear the Cargo there had been no response whatsoever.

The officials said the addresses mentioned in the package was fictitious and nobody turned out to claim the Cargo.

The Maradana police who took over the investigation had already sent the corpse to the Medical Legal morgue till investigations are completed. Meanwhile the Maradana police have appealed to the public to assist the police to identify the body.

GCE O/L Exams commence from Dec. 2

The GCE O/L Examination will commence at 3,894 centres islandwide from December 2 to 13 with a record number of 543,876 candidates are due to sit for the exam, Examination Department sources told the 'Sunday Observer'.

A total of 383,015 school and 138,052 private candidates will appear this year at 529 co-ordinating centres. Steps have also been taken to set up an examination centre in Kalutara for 753 prison candidates and another two in Ratmalana and Tangalle for 3,560 blind candidates, sources said.
