South Africa 'A' fight back after Gunaratne burst

POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa, Nov. 23 - Sri Lankan pace bowler Pulasthi Gunaratne who joined the team for the five-match one-day international series which starts in Johannesburg on Wednesday had instant success and dismissed four top-order South African "A" team batsmen before the homeside fought back to make 221 in a 50-over match at the North West Stadium here today.

Robin Peterson, an allrounder led the recovery of the home team making 61.

South Africa 'A' who won the toss and batted tumbled to 68 for 5 wickets on a slow pitch.

Gunaratne dismissed Daryll Cullinan, Martin van Jaarsveld, skipper Neil McKenzie and Lance Klusener, all full international players. Gunaratne had fine figures of 4 for 44.

Fellow seamer Prabath Nissanka, another one-day specialist had two wickets as South Africa 'A' slid to 124 for 8 wickets but then the 9th wicket pair of R. Peterson (61) and Charl Langeveldt (33 not out) added 57 runs for the ninth wicket before Peterson fell to a fine diving catch at short fine leg by Jehan Mubarak, who earlier held another remarkable catch when he flung himself high to his left to dismiss McKenzie at backward point.

The last wicket pair of Langeveldt and last man Monde Zondeki (23) added a further 40 runs for the last wicket.

Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya who missed the second Test last weekend because of an ankle injury returned to lead the Sri Lanka side and the team was joined by veteran Aravinda de Silva who has retired from Test cricket but joined the side for the one-day games.
