by DIWAKARA MOHOTTI - Kalutara District Correspondent

Kalutara District had a field day, winning the overall trophy, the best performance trophy for both men and women at the four-day North-East Sports Festival held at the Kalutara Esplanade. Though the conditions underfoot for track and field events were far from satisfactory for the participants due to the prevalent rain, the boys and girls numbering around 1,500 from the eight districts put out their best. Kalutara District with 199 points came on top, with Jaffna District second with 67 points and Ampara District third 35 points.

Among the men, the best performance trophy was won by K. A. Gayan Mallika of Kalutara who won the triple jump event with a distance of 14.45 metres, while among the girls, it was Chandrakala Mendis who was best, winning the 400 metres for women in 62.7 seconds.

Kalutara District men and women had 24 Golds, 15 Silvers and 16 Bronze medals, while it was a pleasing sight to witness Jaffna District participating at the meet. Jaffna won 6 Golds, 9 Silvers and 4 Bronze medals. Ampara District had 3 Golds, 2 Silvers and 8 Bronze medals.
