Susanthika gets Duncan White Memorial Award for 2nd time

Asia's spring queen Susanthika Jayasinghe who won the bronze medal in the 200 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games will be presented the Millennium 2000 Duncan White Memorial Award at the Duncan White Sports Foundation awards ceremony to be held on Saturday, November 30 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. This is the second occasion that Susanthika gets the award. She won this award in 1997 too. The ceremony will be held at 6.00 p.m.

Jenifer Moragoda, the Foundation's President will preside at the ceremony. Dr. Nagalingam Ethirveerasingham - first gold medallist for Sri Lanka in 1958 at the Asian Games in Tokyo will be the chief guest. It was an unanimous choice by the DWSF to pick Susanthika Jayasinghe for this prestigious award. Her international achievements since 1994 are as follows:

1994 Asian Games - bronze in 100 metres 11.27 secs and silver in 200 metres 23.28 secs. 1995 South Asian Federation Games - gold medals in 100 metres 11.34 secs and 200 metres 22.95 secs. 1997 IAAF World Championships silver in 200 metres 22.23 secs. 2000 Sydney Olympic Games bronze in 200 metres 22.28 secs and 2002 asian Games gold in 100 metres 11.15 secs. She has put the country on top with her excellent performances on the track. Susanthika emerged from the rural area of Sri Lanka where today inspired by her outstanding achievements there are thousands of athletes who have come into the scene, using her as a model.

The Duncan White Sports Foundation was founded on Duncan White's birth anniversary on March 1, 1990. Born March 1, 1932 his demise on July 3, 1998 came as a shock to all sportspersons. Duncan White received the highest recognition by the President of Sri Lanka at the initiation of Lakshman Kadirgamar PC. MP, the Deshamanya Award. He also received dual citizenship with his wife Angela.
