Indoor cricket net at St. Sylvester's grounds

S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy Sports Correspondent

The National Development Centre of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka will construct an indoor net for cricket at St. Sylvester's College grounds along Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Mawatha, Asgiriya, Kandy at a cost of Rs. ten million.

This was disclosed at a media briefing by the Secretary of the Central Regional Cricket Board in Kandy. Janaka Pathirana said that this site was chosen carefully after making inspection of several other venues by the Chairman of the National Cricket Development Centre - BCCSL and former Sri Lanka cricket captain Duleep Mendis. The site selected has been approved by the Department of Education of the Central Province.

Janaka Pathirana said when selecting the site many factors such as easy accessibility, close proximity to the Central Bus Stand and whether the cricketers could gain entry at all times for practice purposes without being shut out for security reasons of the premises where this indoor wicket is located. These are necessary as cricketers will have to carry their baggage and also should be stranded. Considering the above factors it was found that the grounds owned by St. Sylvester's College was most suitable as it is only a few hundred yards from the Police grounds and the Asgiriya Stadium and also in close proximity to Trinity College, Sri Sumangala College, Vidyartha College, St. Sylvester's College, Sri Rahula College, and St. Anthony's College. Above all it is located in town.

It was also observed that another school had obtained letters from four schools to have this indoor wicket constructed at their premises which is out of town and entry to this facility may not be possible once the main gates are closed for security reason. Further having this facility within the school premises could be a problem for both the school and the cricketers from outside. Thus a near neutral site is necessary.
