Ponting and Martyn make England suffer in the heat

ADELAIDE, Australia, Nov 23 (AFP) - Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn were making England suffer in broiling conditions on the third day of the second Ashes cricket Test at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday. In what was shaping as a draining long day in the field for England, remorseless Australia were one run behind England's first innings total, but with the luxury of eight wickets in hand.

Ponting was leading the way, playing a subdued game but claiming his fifth century in his last seven Tests and sharing in an unbroken 227-run third wicket with Martyn in 280 minutes.

The partnership was the highest by an Australian pair in Adelaide bettering the previous best of 189 by Arthur Morris and Lindsay Hassett against England in 1946-47.

Australia went to lunch without losing a wicket in the morning session played in baking conditions.

At the interval, Australia were 341 for two with Ponting unconquered on 133 and Martyn not out 83.

Ponting's innings was more restrained than usual and followed his 123 in the first innings of the Brisbane Test a fortnight ago.

The Test captain-in-waiting behind 37-year-old skipper Steve Waugh, only hit seven boundaries in his 296-minute vigil. It was his 14th century in his 61st Test.

Ponting's heart fluttered on 99 when Andy Caddick had a big shout for lbw.

Caddick sunk to his knees imploring South African umpire Rudi Koertzen to give him out, but television replays showed that the ball would have missed leg-stump.

Ponting on 130 gave his first chance of the innings when Craig White got his fingers to a hot one over gully in the final over before lunch by Steve Harmison.

Martyn hit his 12th Test half-century and at lunch had batted for 280 minutes with six fours. Temperatures were in the high 30s (90s F) with a forecast of late storms.
