Bicycle tyre factory defunct: Machinery perishes Buildings, machinery and equipment worth about 40 million rupees are perishing since the suspension of production at the Mawanella bicycle tyre factory. The factory was started during the previous regime with the aim of obtaining a higher price for latex, it is reported that the machines were removed from the lump rubber factory and set up at Horana. Machinery was imported from India to commence production last year. The machinery and equipment were reported to be sub-standard resulting in the production of inferior goods. This was the main reason for suspending production. The factory workers too are facing a financial crisis and the residents of the area have appealed to the authorities to re-open the factory promptly. Meanwhile, a latex collection centre now functions at this venue. The emission of chemicals has caused a serious environmental hazard. (Lankapuvath) |
