CEB explains power failure

A press release released by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) states: "The Ceylon Electricity Board has made a full study of the all island power failure which occurred on Friday, January 3.

"The identified cause which initiated the total failure was tripping off of the Steam Generator Unit of the Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Plant (KCCP) which was running at 61 MW and which is still undergoing commissioning tests. "At the time of the tripping off the Kelanatissa Combined Cycle Power Plant was taking 171 MW and the Steam Unit was on testing mode.

The load was shared as Gas Turbine part taking 110 MW and the Steam Part taking 61 MW respectively while the Gas Turbine 7 plant at the Kelantissa Power Complex was running at 111 MW and the Barge mounted power plant was running at 60 MW. "As such, the loss of generation of 342 MW from the national grid has steered the cascade tripping off of other generators and caused the total failure.
