Training on pre-burial rituals for Muslim women by Farah Macan Markar Al Muslimaath, a charity organisation that seeks to educate and uplift the status of Muslim women in Sri Lanka, will conduct several training programmes for Muslim women on the proper manner of performing pre-burial rituals of ablution, bathing and dressing. According to Dr. Marina Thaha Reffai, founder President of Al Muslimaath, many problems had arisen regarding proper ablution and dressing of the bodies of Muslim women, considered a sacred act, according to the Quran and Hadees(teachings of the Prophet). During the past, this ritual was conducted by a particular woman assigned for each area. This task has been handed down from generation to generation. Dr. Reffai said that today their numbers had decreased, and those who performed the ritual, did not do it according to the Quran and Hadees, but according to the way they had been doing as in the past. According to the teachings of the Prophet, it's better for the relatives of the dead to perform the washing and dressing of the body. However according to Dr. Reffai "most people don't know how to do this". To help solve this problem Al Muslimaath has started to conduct programmes for the public, teaching them not only the proper method of bathing and dressing the bodies, but also educating them on the inheritance laws, the last will, Iddah (obligatory period of seclusion) and everything else dealing with death, according to the Quran and Hadees. "All these are conducted free of charge" Dr. Reffai said. |
