Students host Police to 31st night 'do'

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent

Police and university students have hardly ever seen eye to eye and have for long viewed each other with apprehension and suspicion resulting in numerous battles in the past while the law enforcement officers tried to perform their duties when the necessity arose. Peradeniya was no exception during student unrest where a student had been killed and even vehicles burnt in the past.

However, there has been a dramatic change and similar to the ongoing peace, there was a unique occasion on the New Years eve night when the students of Akbar Hall decided to invite the Officer in charge, Peradeniya Police Chief Inspector K. M. S. Bowela and his staff for a party to show their gratitude for good work done.

The University of Peradeniya has been losing computers, printers and other peripheral items over a period of time and later a 29-inch screen television set from Akbar Hall went missing. This was a big loss to the students as they were used by them for studies and relaxation. The matter was reported to the Peradeniya Police.

Headed by Chief Inspector K. M. S. Bowela, the Peradeniya police was determined to help the students and did some smart work. The items valued at nearly Rs. 600,000 were recovered from the house of an undergraduate in Balana in the Kadugannawa Police area.

When the lost items were recovered, the overjoyed students of Akbar and other Halls of Residence decided to show their appreciation to the police and the party was organised establishing rapport between students and police.

The Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Kapila Goonasekera speaking on the occasion said that it was a unique day on which the students had appreciated the good work of the police which would help to build a better relations and allow the police to perform their duties more effectively.

The police must be assisted in the performance of their duties and this show of appreciation, by the students to the law-enforcing officers will augur well for the future.
