A new course of studies at BIDTI The Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute will inaugurate a new course of studies on Monday January 6 at its premises. This is the Foreign Service Training Program specially designed for recruits to the Sri Lanka Foreign Service. This course is long overdue owing to delay in the appointment of the recruits, and now 17 probationers have been appointed and the Foreign Service Training Program is designed for them. The foreign Service Training Program represents a basic course of the institute in as much as the latter has been specially established to provide training in diplomacy. The program will provide inter alia an insight into the character and role of diplomacy, the foreign policy of Sri Lanka, the on going international scene and the responsibilities of the Diplomatic Service in the implementation and formulation of foreign policy. The four month long course is hoped to produce the desired effect in shaping the outlook and personality of diplomats. Foreign Service Training programs are a regular feature in the world today and there is a central organisation known as the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna which monitors such programs through annual conferences. For Third World countries one cannot exaggerate the importance of such training programs as a means of ensuring that its diplomatic representatives are able and trained to promote the interests of the country. The BIDTI hopes that this program will have the desired effect of inculcating a professional outlook and the necessary skills to the recruits which will enable them to live up to the expectations of the country as its sovereign representatives. |
