Cold weather to last till Feb.

A combination of North-East monsoon rains and dry spells is being attributed to the cold weather spell that has seen the temperature plummet to around 40 degree celsius in Nuwara Eliya. Ground frost has also been reported in several areas.

According to the Met. Department, when the skies are cloudless the heat that is absorbed to the ground during the day gets radiated to the atmosphere at night, resulting in a prominent temperature drop. The low temperatures in Horton Plains and Nuwara Eliya is due to this reason.

This climatological feature is expected to occur off-and-on until the North-East monsoon comes to an end in February. Temperatures recorded at such times are found to be lesser by about five degrees than the minimum recorded in that area according to Director Meteorology N. A. Amaradasa.
