In the wake of Britain's UB40 - : Europe's Young Tenors willtake Colombo by storm

by Karel Roberts Ratnaweera

Described as The Sensation of Europe, the Young Tenors group was formed after Hirtretter from Munich, Germany, Hans Hitzeroth from Hamburg and Thomas Klessling from Trier-all trained tenors-who had never met each other before, sang the title song to 'Herzblatt' in Munich. That was the beginning of The Young Tenors group.

The Young Tenors came together only in 1997, but their explosive talent has been witness to the staging of more than 100 concerts each year in Europe and North America with a repertoire that swings blithely between classical and pop music. The trio from Germany have already cut several CDS and videos which are very popular in Europe.

Since then, and in a short time, it became the hit of Europe',performing more than 100 concerts a year, their repertoire ranging from the Classical Verdi-Galas, to Christmas concerts to Spanish hit medleys. They perform cross-overs between Classical, Pop and Hits, so the group is expected to be a crowd puller even among young Sri Lankans who mostly like pop music.

Classical Live Unlimited which promoted the world-famous Vienna Boys in Colombo not so long ago, will also be promoting the Young Tenors. The Sunday Observer and the Daily News will be among the sponsors of the concerts.

The group will be bringing its own orchestra of 18 players on tour which will be an added attraction since professional musicians of their standard are not often to be heard live here.

The Colombo concerts on March 1st and 2nd, to be held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium and the Ballroom of the Colombo Hilton respectively, will be the group's Debut Concerts in Asia.

It was only a few years ago that the Three Tenors-the legendary Luciano Pavarotti, the dashing Spaniard with the dark, lyrical voice, Placido Domingo and the sparkling Spaniard Jose Carreras, with a famous orchestra conducted by that inimitable Indian conductor Zubin Mehta, took the world by storm when they performed at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome during the World Cup Soccer fiesta. It was not only the music-loving people of Europe who were taken by storm, but the soccer world as well; arias from Grand Opera were hummed and sung by hundreds of thousands from all parts of the world, as they would hum and sing 'pop'songs.

Those World Cup soccer concerts by three of the world's greatest opera stars and a 'star' conductor, still remain vivid in the minds of all those who were fortunate enough to hear them live. Perhaps those performances were what inspired the Young Tenors to get together and show what they are capable of.

The Young Tenors repertoire consists of a variety of well-known classical music as well as 'perennials'such as Granada, Valencia, O Sole Mio, A-marillo and several other popular hits.

The concerts should be 'must hear'notes in the diaries of every lover of WCM, as well as those to whom this form of music is unknown but would like to have their first experience of it.

Others involved with the concerts are - Rupavahini Channel Eye, Gold FM (electronic media), the Colombo Hilton (official hotel) and Sri Lankan Airlines (official carrier).
