Better telecom service from next month - Imtiasz Mass Communication Minister Imtiasz Bakeer Markar assured that there would be better telecommunication services in the country from this February as a number of far-reaching changes have been introduced to the service. He said that with the changes introduced to the Telecom anyone from anywhere could have access to any part of the world. "We have thrown our Telecom wide open so that any telecommunication institute could enter and do business at competitive rates benefitting the customer. I am very optimistic such competition will provide better telecom service at cheaper rate", the Minister said. Addressing an All Ceylon Muslim League meeting at Ampara the Minister said that the intention of the Government was to see that the telecom service is taken to the people in every part of the country and especially to the people living in rural areas. "There is a growing demand in the rural sector for telecom facility. But the companies now involved in providing these services cannot meet the demand. Hence, we have thrown the door wide open so that any company interested in investing money and to operate in the country, can do so," he added. Minister Bakeer Markar further said that over two million people are employed in the Middle East and their relatives at this end, could have the facility to communicate with them. "At present we have 865,000 telephones in the country and out of which at least 65 per cent of them are customers living in the Western Province. In the East, only 4 percent and in Uva just 3 per cent have the facility. The lowest is in the North with one per cent", the Minister pointed out. With the investors coming in to do business in this sector, it would bring added value to the country and Sri Lanka would hold an important position in the South East Asia, the Minister said. |
