Employment for youth through 'job nets'

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

In a bid to solve the unemployment problem and implement a "National Employment Policy", 17 "Job Nets" covering all districts will be set up shortly. Irrespective of political affiliations, the job nets will provide suitable jobs for educated youth and others trained in various vocations.

The administrative aspect of the job nets will be closely monitored by the Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce with the primary objective of securing jobs for the unemployed. Relevant information of the unemployed will be computerised for the purpose of selecting candidates for various types of employment.

Inaugurating the first "Job Net" at Agalawatta in the Kalutara district recently, Minister of Employment and Labour, Mahinda Samarasinghe, said that during the short period since the UNF government came into power, it was able to realise the importance of economic development by harnessing the talents of young men and women in the country.

Mr. Samarasinghe said that according to the scheme, computerised data of the unemployed would help to secure the right job for the right person.

He said that a fully computerised national job referral system would benefit both employee and employer where employment opportunities are concerned with the required qualifications either here or abroad.

The minister said that the UNF government was extremely grateful to the Norwegian government for its grant of 4 billion US dollars to initiate the scheme and added that more funds were required either from foreign or local donors to make the scheme a success. "Due to unemployment, the youth had rebelled twice in 1971 and 1989 and, as a result, a large number of young men and women lost their lives.

As there was no tangible employment policy at that time to provide jobs without political influence, most youth launched several anti-government struggles to achieve their objectives. Their plans were based on a series of wrong assumptions," the minister said.
