Improving family quality, FPA's aim

The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka (FPASL) celebrated 50 years of active and dedicated work in the fields of reproductive health, access to information and services on Family Planning, recently.

Family Planning had been a controversial subject. Nevertheless, the main objective of FPASL is not to control the population, but to provide the opportunity to men and women to improve the quality of their families by having children on a planned basis, said FPASL executive director Daya Abeywickrema.

Of the many liberating forces in the 21st century, Family Planning has made a notable contribution to extending freedom to men and women all over the world, stated Mr. Bradman Weerakoon, a former Secretary General of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and a senior volunteer of FPASL in a written message. "Over the years the association has been the motivation of family planning moving from its demographic goals to that of reproductive health".

Shiranthini de Silva, FPASL president and A. C. Wijenathan, a past president, also spoke.

FPASL is the result of the efforts of a group of dedicated volunteers in the field, which started in 1953. It became a member of the IPPF in 1954 and, within a span of ten years, was recognised by the Ministry of Health as the foremost NGO in the promotion of family health and planning issues. It was made an approved charity by an Act of Parliament in 1967.

The association also celebrated its Founder's Day, amidst a gathering of past and present volunteers at FPASL premises recently.
