Ordaining elder persons as bhikkus by Deepal Warnakulasuriya A programme of ordaining elder persons as bhikkus has been organised by the Dharma Vijaya Foundation in Colombo and Bodhiraja Foundation in Embilipitiya, said the Anunayaka of the Amarapura Chapter, the Most Ven. Weligama Gnanarathana Thera, at a media gathering at Dharma Vijaya Foundation recently. The Anunayaka Thera said that according to the agenda novices should be ordained as bhikkus on the Vesak full moon Poya day. He said that was a nationally important task at the moment and matured and educated bhikkus were required to help and guide laymen on the correct path. The Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera said that arrangements have been made to conduct special training on religious and social aspects for novices as well although retired persons free from family bonds were preferred. He said that suitable elder persons for bhikkus were selected on the basis of an interview. The Thera said that a 'Kepakaru Dayaka' foster parents scheme had already begun and more foster parents from among buddhist devotees from Sri Lanka or other countries were sought to fulfil the target. Those who wish to be bhikkus or foster parents should contact the Board of Directors, Dharma Vijaya Foundation, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Sarana Mawatha, Colombo 07. |
