Best team Kandy SC to miss best player Omar

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Even before the 2003 rugby season could get off the ground, the Sri Lanka rugby received a severe blow with former Trinity College, Kandy Sports Club and Sri Lanka captain Haris Omar, saying that he is not in a position to take an active part in the sport. He was adjudged the Best Player for 2002.

He disclosed that he has found employment at Slimline in Pannala as a merchandiser since December and that he does not have the time to attend practices or even play any rugby.

A dynamic No. 8, Omar, whose father Iswan too, represented Trinity, several Up-country clubs and Sri Lanka with distinction, played for Trinity from 1993 to 1995 in which year he was the captain winning the coveted "Lion". He has represented Kandy Sports Club from 1996 to 2002 and Sri Lanka from 1996 to 1999 and again in 2002. He also led the Sri Lanka under-19 and under-24 outfits.

Meanwhile, Kandy Sports Club led by second-rower Pradeep Basnayake, was adjudged the Best Club side, after winning the "triple" (7's, League and Clifford Cup) last season. They won the League and Clifford Cup for the second consecutive year.

Though Kandy were third in the League in 2000, they won the Clifford Cup, and in the previous year (1999), won the 7s for the first time, League for the fourth occasion and Clifford Cup too. In 1998, they did not have much success finishing runner-up in the League and President's Trophy as well. They won the "triple" (League, Clifford Cup and President's Trophy) in 1997.

In the previous year (1996) were runners-up in the League, but won both the Clifford Cup and President's Trophy. They won the "Triple" (League, Clifford Cup and President's Trophy) in 1995. In 1994 they won the League for the first occasion after being third in 1993 when they won the Clifford Cup and runners-up in the Premadasa Trophy. They were third in the League in 1992, won the Clifford Cup for the first time and were runners-up in the Premadasa Trophy.

The Secretary of the Kandy Sports Club, Malath Silva said that the secret behind the success is the commitment by every player and the full support that the team gets from the club's committee headed by Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte. He thanked Kandy's main sponsor - Singer (Sri Lanka) Limited, and the assistance given by various other sources, including Malik Samarawickrema (a Trustee of the club), who is also a former President of the SLRFU and present Chairman of the UNP.
